FACULTY & CLASSES 2023 (2024 to be announced)
Lea Garnier: SOUND TOOL AWARENESS
Every sound we use for sound bath journeys or private sessions has a unique voice or attribute to help facilitate a therapeutic healing response. In this segment, we will explore the “tools of the trade” and have plenty of practice time to feel into the unique voice of the conch shell, the shruti box, crystal bowls and pyramids, the gong, tuning forks and more.
In 2010, Lea co-founded the first East coast Annual SoundHealing Intensive at Menla, NY. By creating a forum for pioneers of SoundHealing to share their knowledge, a platform was launched for in depth studies that has greatly contributed to todays expansive and ever growing field of sound practitioners world wide. As executive director of Sage Academy of Sound, a school she founded in 2007, she now offers 5 SoundHealing training/retreat intensives a year in the Catskill Mountains of New York.
Silvia Nakkach: THE GENERATIVE VOICE OF MEDICINE MELODIES
“Spiritual evolution aims at giving back to a human being his original, acoustic, and luminouspurity, transforming the self into a subtle cosmic resonator.” – Inayat Khan
The Voice is our original most intimate and generative space of co-existence. the Voice is directly connected to our umbilical cord, the mother, creation, and theCosmos. Enchanted by the emotional magic of medicine melodies, our mindset about the voice isfree from the archetype of the singer and chanting turns into a natural medium forquantum listening – always listening to everything without judgment and multiplying theconnections with divine textures of reality and boundless healing. The practice of deep chantbecomes a point of entry to acumulate one’s original vital energy and prana (life force), to assessand express distress and tensions, and to activate both circulatory and attentional systems.
Delving into acoustic subtleties and Silvia’s refined melodiousness, we’ll explore the ecstatic, the shamanic, and the contemplative energy of the voice through the cosmic beauty of the Icaros, Afro-Brazilian Orixà invocations, and the Ragas of India. The music-making will be accompanied by indigenous instruments, Crystal Tone bowls, and amazing new ways to play with the harmonic resonance of the sruti box. (Silvia is the foremost music psychotherapist who introduced the sruti box to the field, including Nada yoga and sound healing in the early 80s).
This session is designed with an emphasis on the mystical experience of sound. Through this liberating approach, the Voice becomes a conduit to enhance the sensibility of the subtle in the body and the mind, expanding consciousness states, and reconnecting with human’s intrinsic blueprint of joy, devotion, along with the spiritual engagement that follows.

Jessica Caplan: SONIC EMBODIMENT
Our voice is medicine, the original sound healing instrument each of us was born with. When we tap into the voice as the multi-faceted tool for healing, transformation, and authentic connection that it is, we open up access to our vast potential. In this workshop, we will nurture our connection to our voice through movement, sounding, singing, and deep listening; we will express our essence in sound; and we will rest in silence and sound to digest and integrate what we've received. We will play, journey, explore, and activate our own unique vocal channel. Through embodying our sacred instrument, we will re-member ourselves as the Sound Beings we are.
Jess is a singer and a vocal coach. She works with voice and sound as gateways for transformation and healing. Known for her voice-infused soundscapes, and open-hearted approach to embodying the voice, Jessica leads immersive workshops, retreats, trainings, and 1:1 mentorships in the art of therapeutic voice and sound. Jessica grew up singing and performing, but it was in her 30’s, through journeys in yoga, sound healing, and deep listening that she discovered her authentic voice. She’s is passionate about cultivating connection, compassion, and curiosity to guide students to their own unique expressions. Jess is a graduate of the Open Center’s Sound and Music Institute, completed Silvia Nakkach’s Yoga of the Voice program, and currently studies classical Indian music with master vocalist Samarth Nagarkar. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and daughter.
Angell Deer: THE ANCIENT PRACTICE OF ANCESTRAL JOURNEYING AND THE HEALING POWER OF THE DRUM

We will also explore how we can call upon the 4 directions, the 4 elements, and the Spirits associated with them to bring multiple energetic and spiritual layers into this work.
FIRE CEREMONY
Grandfather Fire is one of our oldest ancestors. He was here at the creation of the universe, and created this Earth. In most indigenous traditions, Fire is used in ceremony for praying, cleansing, protection and wisdom. In this ceremony we will gather around the fire, learn how to pray with the fire, discover ancient ways to work with the fire and learn from it
ANDEAN COSMOLOGY & PRAYER
During this 2-hour session, Angell Deer will share foundational teachings of Andean Cosmology, a 10,000+ year old spiritual tradition still alive in the mountains of Peru. From ancient concept of living in good relations, to the circular view of time, elders from this tradition carry immense knowledge that can be very valuable for our time. Angell will also introduce the Andean Altar, the Andean Cosmology medicine wheel and its possible application when used for healing and wisdom.
Eric Fraser: "SUR PAGOL"-MAD FOR TUNE
In Kolkata, India, there is a Bengali saying that when one is deeply enthralled with music they are "Sur Pagol" or mad/crazy (in a good way) for tune. In this workshop we will discover and practice the tuning system of Indian Ragas, and how intoxicating it feels to listen, play or sing with a Tanpura or Shruti Box. We will explore what makes good "Sur" (the tone and tune of a note), how it works in Indian ragas, and how it can be utilized for healing sound meditations.
Eric Fraser's training in Indian classical music on the bansuri flute occurred in the Guru-Sishya Parampara tradition, meaning that he received training in Indian classical music while living with his teacher (Guru - late Pandit Gopal Roy), in Kolkata, India. Eric received years of extensive taleem (oral teachings). The "sur" (tone and tune) of Eric's flute lineage has a unique sound in the landscape of Indian music, telling the story of an old world Kolkata vibe through a gayaki ang or "singing style" of bansuri flute.
Eric is also a multi-instrumentalist, educator, composer, and songwriter. He is a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) and a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT). He is the founder of Sound and Nature, a licensed mental health practice in Hudson, NY. Eric is also a co-founder of the Brooklyn Raga Massive and a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar for Indian classical music. We will explore how we can use journeying, drumming, and singing to bring very valuable information to heal ourselves and others and to channel healing energies into a client’s energy field. We will also explore how we can call upon the 4 directions, the 4 elements, and the Spirits associated with them to bring multiple energetic and spiritual layers into this work.
Lea Garnier & The Sage Sangha: CRYSTAL CORPUS SOUND HEALING CEREMONY
When the crystal bowls and pyramids are sounded with healing intention and in a sacred way, they invoke a quiet peace that can still our minds and release stress from our bodies allowing us to relax and open to receive healing. As they are crystalline in structure, they are by their very nature extraordinary tools for amplifying, storing and transmitting intentions of healing, love, peace and well being. Because the structure of our bodies and DNA are crystalline in nature, we respond and resonate with the frequencies associated with the properties of quartz crystal. , and how as a living mineral kingdom they lovingly partner with us within our current expression and elevate us to our highest love potential vibrationally.

MENLA'S Mission Statement
For a thousand years, Tibet was called the "Land of Medicine" by its neighbors. It is in this spirit that we named our center Menla, which is Tibetan for "Medicine Buddha". Menla's mission is to offer a world-class spa and integrated healing system, combining the best of Western integrative medicine with elements of Tibetan medicine, Ayurveda, and other holistic traditions.
MENLA, SACRED LAND HISTORY
375 million years ago, before dinosaurs and when the Catskill region was under a shallow sea, a half-mile-wide meteor crashed here, creating the oldest known meteor impact crater on Earth. The crash was equivalent of several hundred million tons of TNT and pulverized the bedrock, leaving a 6-mile-wide crater. Over millions of years, different layers of sediment were deposited on top of one another, and with erosion caused by rainfall and the Ice Age, Panther Mountain as we now see it was gradually formed. Looking at a topographical map, Panther appears to be a nearly perfectly circular mountain, surrounded by two rivers, one flowing North and the other South. The crater is approximately 1.5 to 2 miles beneath the surface of the earth, and due to lack of solid bedrock, the gravitational field here is 0.2% less than the surrounding areas. The local Native American peoples, including the Esopus and Mahicans, regarded this valley and region, with its enormous first-growth hemlock trees, as especially sacred, a place of the spirits. They never settled here and only used this valley for ceremonial purposes.
